The story of Franco's starts back in Tuscany, Italy, in 1946 — when young Franco Ambrogi learned how to sew from his mother. He moved to Richmond at 15 and worked for a small tailor shop, then at Thalhimers and Berry-Burk before supplementing his income by doing tailoring work out of his garage.

From there, Ambrogi quickly earned a reputation as one of Richmond's finest tailors, which he and his wife Ruth would parlay into his first store, opening on Lakeside Avenue in 1972. In 1985, he expanded into a 35,000-square-foot store with an in-house tailor shop and marble-floored rotunda. Over 40 years later, he would expand further with the flagship Lakeside location still going off Interstate 95 and a second location at Short Pump Town Center outdoor mall.

And the business is still all about family: His son-in-law Kevin Reardon and daughter Maria now manage store operations and buying for the Lakeside store, while his son Mark Ambrogi oversees buying and operations of the West End store.

All along, the business has prided itself on quality clothing and expert advice. Plus the in-house tailoring makes it one of the few remaining tailor shops in the country. You can visit its Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest pages to learn more about latest designer fashions, as well as store events and trunk shows.
