Second Place: The Whistle Stop Theatre Company
Third Place: Virginia Repertory Theatre
Change must come to all things, and after four years of consistency, this ranking has finally changed with Richmond Triangle Players grabbing the top spot from previous winner Virginia Repertory Theatre. Though longtime artistic director John Knapp left last summer for a job in Baltimore, RTP has continued his tradition of mixing campy, fun works such as “5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche,” with serious dramas like its recent staging of “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches.” The Whistle Stop Theatre Company in Ashland mounts original works for children. And Virginia Rep continues to be the juggernaut in the local scene, staging a perfect “The Color Purple” last season and a fun take on “Mame.”
