The Byrd Theatre is one of the most stunning movie palaces in the country and the world. There have been recent changes in programming, including a big-screen classics series expanding to every Wednesday plus one Sunday a month. At the end of last year, the theater repaired the majority of plaster damage from old roof leaks from before the roof was repaired in 2007. And it’s in the process of renovating the bathrooms and having an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant bathroom installed. But there’s more (drumroll please): By the end of this summer, the center section of seats, or the vast majority, should be replaced — a development that should thrill all Richmonders. “We don’t have any idea when the others will be replaced because we don’t have the funding in place yet,” manager Todd Schall-Vess says. But this is a great start.
