The trick is not to overanalyze Monument Avenue. Here is one of our nation’s grandest and lovingly preserved residential boulevards dotted every few blocks with grandiose monuments to Confederates. But then there’s the monument to Arthur Ashe, a black man who personified grace on and off the tennis court. Monument Avenue forms a cohesive aesthetic even if the mixed messages seem unbridgeable.
