Third Place: The Funny Bone
Maybe it's the reliability of its schedule — one show every Friday and two every Saturday — that has voters naming ComedySportz Improv Theatre tops in yukking it up. Maybe it's that the instructors can teach ordinary people to be funny, offering classes for all ages, little league through adult. And if you and your office mates could use a little team building, they'll use improv games to make that happen, too. "You gain so much from laughing, Artistic Director Dave Gau says. "Not only the proven health benefits, but it's the best way to relax and unwind after a stressful day. It's true for us, the performers, too. And, hey, laughing at us is so much better than therapy." Richmond Comedy Coalition bills itself as: "Live comedy. Dead serious." Its bi-monthly shows at Gallery5 — RCC Presents and Richmond Famous — have garnered devout followings for reliably hysterical evenings. The West End's Funny Bone is a professional comedy club and restaurant, the kind of place where you can catch pros such as Mike Birbiglia or Tommy Davidson while enjoying a basket of crispy chicken wings.
