Second Place: India K' Raja
Third Place: Lehja
Never have there been so many Indian food options in Richmond, with the Short Pump area claiming favorites year in and out. Anokha prides itself on a unique, contemporary approach to the genre, mixing upscale atmosphere, exotic spices and Western cooking techniques for an innovative style and nuanced flavors. Anokha's cocktail culture, wines and single malts lead the lounge list, and the patio is a destination for the post-work crowd. In the West End, longtime traditionalist India K 'Raja returns as a favorite. It touts unpretentious dining that's well beyond curry, original and family recipes that are health-conscious and "cooked with love" and served with personal attention. Community involvement runs deep at the establishment, which has been in business since 1995 and was Henrico's first Indian restaurant. Lehja in Short Pump is popular for its distinctive décor, inspired by California in the '70s, and its nouveau Indian menu. It's an escapist's fantasy, unlike anything in the area. Lehja's following includes local food cognoscenti and the area's corporate professionals who crowd in for drinks and snacks, full-on feasting, or outdoor dining and wining by the romantic fire pit. A creatively presented, three-course weekend brunch is also popular.
