The Jefferson Hotel

101 W. Franklin St.

Second Place: The One Bed and Breakfast

Third Place: Linden Row Inn

Walking through the main entrance of the Jefferson, it’s not hard to believe the site has a long history: two fires (1901 and 1944), pet alligators (the last died in 1948), visits from Bill and Hillary Clinton (2014). And while it’s a grand place for out-of-towners to spend the night, the hotel remains a hidden gem for any Richmonder looking for a generous and indulgent happy hour (three appetizers for $20 at Lemaire) or a Gilded Age backdrop for a restroom break (getting a nod for Best Public Restroom in 2012’s Best of Richmond). Visitors looking for a more personal touch and closer access to Richmond’s Carytown shopping district could do little better than the One Bed and Breakfast. And the classic Linden Row Inn downtown offers something a bit in between the two — a travel back through time on a leaner budget.
