It's been a rough year for Richmond florists. A long winter — including snow on Valentine's Day — and a cold start to spring had Strange's Florist President Bill Gouldin itching for 70-degree weather. But the customers come back. A perennial voter favorite, Gouldin says even after nearly 80 years the draw remains the same: "We work very hard to have a good selection." What began in 1935 with a postal worker running a flower shop from his yard has become a local chain with several locations, a couple of which also feature a garden center and nursery. Vogue Flowers and Gifts has been a bright spot on Boulevard for nearly two decades. And Coleman Brothers boasts 15 delivery vans from its Dumbarton Road store.
