When Pavement sang “Cut Your Hair” back in the ’90s, it was mocking hair bands and their elevation of image over music chops. And while most people put haircuts on hold during the pandemic, barbers and stylists are once again busy with people eager to look a bit more civilized.
Style readers overwhelmingly voted Karl’s Place Barber Shop the best place to get your locks trimmed, a fact that sits well with owner Karl Philippi. A barber since 1992, he’d always worked at other people’s shops with some great people, he says. But in 2014 he decided it was time to head out and start his own shop.
“From the beginning, I just wanted the shop to be a reflection of me,” he explains. “Having a place where folks can gather, relax and leave feeling great, that’s my goal.”
Karl’s Place Barber Shop on Three Chopt Road is a simple place: “I’m a one-man band right now, so it’s the basics,” Philippi says. “I do cuts and beard trims and that keeps them happy.” When he started his own shop, he felt fortunate that many of his loyal customers followed him to his new digs. Since then, the shop has benefitted from the bustling area where it’s located and, of course, word of mouth from happy customers.
Besides the satisfaction of turning overgrown heads and beards into well-trimmed attention-getters, Philippi enjoys being master of his own domain.
“I love sports, so that’s the primary visual when you walk through the door,” he says. “I also love people and getting to know them – and that’s really what it’s all about.”
