Richmond, 1977: With the punk music genre taking shape (The Ramones, The Sex Pistols and The Clash had just begun to receive attention worldwide), 25-year-old Christine Gibson and a few of her friends jumped at the chance to bring this new sound to their city. They formed Beex and, thanks to Gibson's gravelly voice and untamed spirit, became one of Richmond's best-known proto-punk bands. The group continued to play together for the next 30 years, until Gibson's untimely death in December 2007. Beex is performing once more, this time at a memorial to honor the punk rock queen. Buttercup, Jonathan ("The Juggler") Austin and Terry Garland join them at the Canal Club Friday, July 25, at 7 p.m. $5. Call 643-2582 or visit www.thecanalclub.com.
