Not all musical experiences have to be a descent into hedonism. I know that sounds impossible, but it’s true. Sometimes you just want to sit back, listen to some music and maybe even learn a little something. Such an opportunity will present itself on Wednesday, Aug. 13, when Gallery5 plays host to Bar Talk, a night of informal music and education with Classical Revolution RVA and musicologist Eric Charnofsky. The evening starts with Charnofsky, an instructor of 20th-century music history and keyboard repertory at Case Western Reserve University, presenting the lecture ““From Tonality to Atonality: Classical Devolution or Forward Progression?” String quartets by Debussy and Schoenberg, Charles Ives’ Largo and Benjamin Britten’s “Songs from the Chinese” will be performed after the discussion and the bar will be open. The night of civil interactive entertainment begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free. gallery5arts.org.
