Bad Economy Sours Restaurant Review

We'd like to thank Style Weekly for considering Tastebuds American Bistro for a review (“Savory Character,” Food & Drink, Oct. 20). We are, however, disappointed at the tone and content of the first three paragraphs of the review, which are devoted to discussing the state of the economy.

The reviewer is surprised that folks are actually dining out (she refers to the place being “packed” and that she was “lucky, in fact, to get a table”) and unfairly chides one group of our customers for being “downright celebratory” (they were, indeed, celebrating a 50th birthday). Is the reviewer implying that we should all stay home, not patronize local establishments, not support local artists and musicians?

We found these comments rather confusing since Style Weekly is a publication devoted to the culture and entertainment scene in Richmond, encouraging folks to get out and participate in the goings-on about town. We wish that the reviewer would have spent more time describing our philosophy of providing a dining experience that is moderately priced, casually presented (no formal tablecloths needed, thank you), with food that is prepared with the freshest ingredients and a seasonal approach as well as offering an eclectic and carefully chosen list of wine and beer to pair with an ever-changing menu.

We don't mind the comments about the salt. That is after all a matter of taste, and appropriate for a reviewer to critique, but please don't waste valuable space on issues that are out of our hands.
