Asian Delight

Eleven booths will prepare samplings of food from different Asian countries, including those mentioned above, and from China, Japan, the Philippines, India, Korea and Vietnam.

“You are going to taste the food and culture of Asia without leaving Richmond,” says Raus Qureshi, chairman of the food committee. “All the food is authentic; it’s spicy, with lots of flavor and very good to look at.”

About 130 volunteers will be dishing out traditional favorites like egg rolls and fried rice, but the festival is an opportunity to try something new like Bulgogi (a Korean dish made from marinated beef strips) or Aloo Sagh (a Pakistani salad of spinach, potatoes and spices). Meat-lovers and vegetarians will find plenty of choices, and you can buy large sample platters or a single meal. The booths accept only cash, and all proceeds go to charities that support the Asian community, including the Richmond Chinese School, Asian American Radio and Orphanage Outreach. — John White

The Asian American Festival takes place at Richmond Convention Center, 300 N. Fifth St., on May 10 from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Admission is free. For more event information, call 783-7300.
