Actors, techies, critics and fans donned their finest last night to celebrate the seventh annual Richmond Theatre Critics Circle Awards. The show, held at the November Theatre, hands out Artsies in celebration of achievement in local theater.
Virginia Repertory Theatre’s “The Color Purple” was the big winner of the evening, taking home five Artsies, including Best Musical, Best Direction (Musical), Best Actor (Musical) and Best Actress (Musical). In collaboration with Virginia Rep, Cadence Theatre Company won Best Play and Best Direction (Play) for “Clybourne Park.”
Richmond Triangle Players won three Artsies for “Cabaret,” and Firehouse Theatre Project’s “The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity” won in three regular categories and a took home a special award for Outstanding Achievement in Fight Choreography.
Highlights of the evening included actor Scott Wichmann’s taped acceptance speech from Djbouti where he is serving in the Navy, a raunchy performance of “Willkommen” from the cast of “Cabaret,” a short In Memoriam film and a moving rendition of the titular number from “The Color Purple.”
