Ask a dozen different artists about the meaning of "art" and you're bound to get a dozen different definitions. But one thing is certain there's a lot more to art than just a pretty picture hanging on a wall. VCU's painting and printmaking department aims to explore the rich topic of art by bringing in some of the world's hottest artists for its spring 2000 lecture series. The free lectures are open to the public and promise to shed some insight onto the sometimes contentious topic of contemporary art. This month's lectures feature New York painter David Reed on Feb. 2 in the Commons Theater; David Lasry, master printer and founder of Two Palms Press in New York on Feb. 9 at Grace Street Theater; David Diao, painter and faculty member at the Whitney Museum of American Art on Feb. 15 at Grace Street Theater; and Michael Corris on Feb. 28, place to be announced. 1708 Gallery is looking for entries for its 2000 Artist as Critic program. Gary Stephan, a New York artist and critic, will select 10 professional visual artists and three critics from within a 60-mile radius of Richmond to participate in the program. Artist finalists will be included in a June exhibition in the gallery while essays by Stephan and the critics will be published. Entries must be received by March 26. For details, send a SASE to 1708 Gallery, P.O. Box 12520, Richmond, Va., 23241.
