Formed in Seattle, indie-folk band the Head and the Heart plays a mixture of Americana, country rock and classic pop. The lineup came together in 2009 when songwriters Jonathan Russell and Josiah Johnson met at an open-mic event and quickly brought on more members, including Richmond’s Tyler Williams, former drummer for Prabir and the Substitutes. The group spent the next year touring the Pacific Northwest and self-releasing its eponymous debut album. That created enough buzz to receive offers from several record labels — the band went with Sub Pop — and a reissue of the album in early 2011, which led Head and the Heart to be played constantly on radio stations and get booked on Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon’s shows. The group is working on songs for its new album, to be released this year. The Head and the Heart perform at Friday Cheers on Brown’s Island on Friday, May 31, at 6:30 p.m. $10. venturerichmond.com.
