And Banjo Was His Name-O

Bela Fleck has seen beyond the fields of bluegrass to another world, brothers and sisters! A world wherein the banjo is not just the plaything of roots musicians! His own roots in the late '70s and early '80s lie in those bluegrass fields, though, playing solo or with such folks as mandolinero Sam Bush. But it's with the Flecktones that his banjo has set out across the land, encountering jazz and R&B and varieties of world music that, when bent through those five plucky strings, becomes something else entirely. Yes! But the versatility of music is not in the instrument, friends, it is in the player! Now, let us play. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones play Innsbrook After Hours with Umphrey's McGee and Marc Broussard Thursday, Aug. 17, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15-$35.
