The “Ancestral Memories” dance concert honors the strength and spirit of people of African descent by showcasing music and dance from Western Africa, Guatemala, Brazil, Cuba and the United States. The performance will be presented in two sections. “It Takes a Language,” choreographed by Kevin LaMarr Jones (pictured), is a coming-of-age theatrical dance journey that calls upon familiar imagery to show the human experience. Harlem-based choreographer Fatima Logan presents “Down to the River,” a ballet inspired by the fable of the pearl that summarizes the “Gnostic Call,” to awaken from the dream life into realization of God and self. “Ancestral Memories” takes place July 13-15 at Dogtown Dance Theatre. $15. 334-8136.
