All Brass Fest Kicks off Modlin Center Season

The Modlin Center opens its 2014-2015 season with the All Brass Kick-off Bash! Held outside --rain or shine--on Westhampton Green, its an opportunity to get a maximum dose of state-of-the-art horn frenzy.

Six hours would be a major commitment to a single musical genre if the bands were not such varied examplars of the ongoing brass band renaissance. No BS Brass, long a local favorite, has drawn national attention in the past couple of years with gigs at renowned venues like NYC’s Lincoln Center and Boston’s Regattabar. They’ve done an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and stormed the headquarters of Forbes Magazine, playing “Thriller” with former Presidential candidate Steve Forbes in tow.

Occasional Richmond visitors Slavic Soul Party infuses their exuberant mix with a Balkan tinge. The all-star Brooklyn-based ensemble, led by percussionist Matt Moran, combines serious jazz chops with a devil-may-care appeal accessible enough to open for alternative bands like the Dresden Dolls and Arcade Fire. Red Baraat has its own distinct ethnic blend- drawing their sonic palette from the wedding bands of Northern India, albeit filtered through funk and hip hop beats.

The event headliners are the 2012 Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band. Formed by marching bandmates at a high school in New Orleans’ Treme neighborhood, they’become the leading exponent of the Big Easy brass tradition. Over the past three decades they’ve traveled the world and released 15 albums. Scheduled as the closing act, they’ll end the day where the music started.

Sunday, September 7, starting at noon. Adults $34, Seniors $31, Children $17, UR Students $10.

12:30pm: No BS! Brass

1:45pm: Slavic Soul Party

3pm: Red Baraat
