A Talk with the Marquis de Lafayette

When: Sat., July 13, 1:45-3 p.m. 2019

St. John’s Church Foundation is pleased to hold a talk with the Marquis de Lafayette in honor of Bastille Day, July 14. Born into nobility and baptized Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, the young Marquis de Lafayette sympathized with the colonies in British America. Defying the explicit orders of King Louis XVI, who did not wish to provoke Great Britain, the marquis purchased a ship La Victoire and funded his own way to America, vowing to fight for liberty. As both a friend and a father figure, George Washington the held the Frenchman in high esteem.
