$8,000 Raised for Street Art Security Guard Who Was Stalked, Beaten and Robbed

Organizers of the RVA Street Art Festival say they’re going to present an $8,000 check Thursday to the security guard who was severely beaten while patrolling the former GRTC Bus Depot on West Cary Street.

The depot, still owned by GRTC, was reopened to the public after last year’s festival, which brought in artists from around the world to paint murals on the empty warehouses. The festival’s organizers will present the check to security guard Jack Newsom at 11 a.m. in front of the “Light of Human Kindness” mural on West Cary Street near Davis.

The organizers started the online fundraiser for Newsom in late November after police said he was stalked, beaten and robbed by an unknown assailant.

Over 200 people donated to the fund.
