In the first six months of 2013, trumpeter and Virginia Commonwealth University poster model Victor Haskins will have established a weekly Wednesday night residency at Bogart's, released his debut CD "The Truth," traveled to South Africa, and taken part in the prestigious Betty Carter Jazz Program at the Kennedy Center. Haskins' energetic activity perhaps lends a touch of irony to the title "Stasis." The tune is a minor blues in an elongated 24-bar form. The melody cycles around a few key notes. "It's built around the idea of coming back to the center," Haskins says. "When I am soloing, I am thinking about that concept, stretching and twisting it." The veteran band includes VCU drum adjunct Tony Martucci, saxophonist Luis Hernandez, and bassist Tom Baldwin. Also featured is the mercurial expatriate Richmond pianist Steve Kessler, who's ceaselessly inventive playing complements Haskins' focused exploration. —P.E.
