15. Richmond Shape Note Singers, "Glory Shone Around"




You can read more about the Richmond Shape Note Singers on page 30. The group sang this 18th-century American Christmas carol for the WRIR Christmas Show in December. "Glory Shone Around" appears also in the BF White Sacred Harp (also known as the Cooper Book to distinguish it from the commonly used 1991 edition of the Sacred Harp). The Cooper book tends to focus on more gospel-sounding songs, Leyland del Re says, but this particular one is an exception. "The song is a solid example of a fuguing tune where each singing part drops out and re-enters in an overlapping sequence," singer Nate Matthews says. "Following the swell effect of the fugue section, a climax is created when all parts come back into unison." — Brent Baldwin
