Beer Science, Balliceaux Redux + More



Opened: After a few hiccups on the first day, Kuba Kuba Dos finally opened in the old Graffiti Grill space at 403 N. Ridge Road April 27. kubakuba.info.

Temporary closing: Balliceaux announced that it will close June 7 for some much needed renovation and clean-up. It will reopen Sept. 1 with a re-imagined menu featuring Indochinese cuisine. balliceauxrva.com.

Start it up: Vibeats is here. Pronounce it vibe-eats, and you have a website created in Richmond that works like Pandora to give you personalized local restaurant and dish recommendations. The start-up pitched its concept to AOL’s Steve Case on Monday at a Rise of Rest event at CenterStage.

Brew science: The Science Museum of Virginia is getting in on the craft beer craze and will celebrate all things beer at Science on Tap on Saturday, May 9, from 2-6 p.m. Learn about the science behind beer-making with James River Homebrewers, Original Gravity Homebrew Supplies and Huguenot Hops, along with local breweries and live music. smv.org.

Kids and candy: Gearharts Chocolates held a contest with Boys and Girls Clubs in Charlottesville, Fairfax, Newport News, Richmond and Roanoke. The company will produce chocolates featuring the six winning drawings stenciled on top. Boxes of six will be available in stores on Mother’s Day. gearhartschocolates.com.
