The confessional, caramelized pop of Waxahatchee doesn’t shy away from confrontation — either with itself or others. Like Liz Phair’s “Exile in Guyville,” the recently electrified, indie-folk project of Katie Crutchfield conveys its angst and frustrations in the nude. Her sophomore release, “Cerulean Salt,” is a soliloquy to the conflicting emotions that define early adulthood. Tunes such as “Blue Pt. II,” “Tangled Envisioning” and “Misery Over Dispute” are open-wound farewells to youth that bleed with an almost uncomfortable intimacy. While that may sound like a bummer, it isn’t. Crutchfield’s catchy existential conflicts forsake pity parties for blunt, honest redemptions. Waxahatchee plays Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Strange Matter, with All Dogs, Cayetana and Little Master. Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. strangematterrva.com.
