Wax Idols
  • Wax Idols
Wax Idols might sound like a dark, post-punk British band, but they reside in sunny Oakland, Calif. Magnetic frontwoman Hether Fortune is a dominatrix and fetishist as well as something of an unknown songwriting gem of the dark-wave, atmospheric S&M punk variety. The band’s sophomore album, “Discipline and Desire” (Slumberland Records), turns away from the garage punk of the band’s first album toward a group effort that recalls shimmering ’80s new wave as well as darker reverb-heavy post punk, and it has been racking up good reviews. Fans of Siouxsie Sioux, Bauhaus and even Joan Jett may want to check her out before she gets too big for rooms like this. Wax Idols, TV Ghost and locals Big No perform at Strange Matter on April 28. Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $7. strangematterrva.com.
