Rock ’n’ roll once was considered blasphemous. Even Frank Sinatra was appalled, writing in a French magazine in 1957: “Rock ’n’ roll smells phony and false. It is sung, played and written, for the most part, by cretinous goons.” Listening to the music of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers and others, you wonder how anyone possibly could have felt that way. The Rock and Roll Jubilee Show, a musical review celebrating the music of those cretinous goons, takes the stage for three performances this weekend at the Cultural Arts Center of Glen Allen starting Friday, Feb. 27. Set in 1958, the show is set at fictional radio station WJKS with Richmond musicians Craig Evans, Brad Tucker, Brian Sulser, George Garrett, Jim Wark and B.J. Kocen playing tunes that spiked ol’ blue eyes’ short-sighted condemnation. Call 261-2787 or visit artsglenallen.com.
