New York-based band the Flail came together in 2001, when the members were students at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York. The group’s academic background is reflected in the layered architecture of the music, a sleek post-post-bop sound consistently grounded in crisp articulation and intuitive interplay, echoing (without aping) the Blue Note 1950s and ’60s ensemble sessions. Supporting its recent recording, “Live at Smalls,” the Flail, featuring Midlothian-bred trumpeter Dan Blankinship, performs at the Camel on June 19 at 9 p.m. $5. 353-4901.
