Teen Body, Spacemonster and the Cales at Strange Matter

Monday, Aug. 18. 8 p.m.

When I first heard “Quarterlife” by Brooklyn’s Teen Body, I thought I was listening to an unreleased track from the Cure’s 1980 album, “Boys Don’t Cry.” Is that a bad thing? Not if you are into the melancholic and forlorn, I guess, but when you specialize in doing what’s already been done, you can only be but so impressive. Based on that one tune though, Teen Body shows considerable promise, as the tune is insidiously catchy like all the best new-wave bummers of old. Richmond’s Spacemonster makes charming lo-fi bedroom pop that sounds like “Pod”-era Ween doing its best Brian Wilson imitation. The Cales are discordant and gratingly compelling. Like Teen Body and Spacemonster, it’s a hit-or-miss proposition depending on your taste in appropriations. All three audio makers play Monday, Aug. 18, at Strange Matter. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $6.
