Style & Substance: Giving History a Hand

Emily Howard, a journal clerk for the House of Delegates, had the perfect accessory at the Virginia Capitol Preview Gala in April.

At a local store that's no longer around, she'd found cigar-box purses with various Richmond scenes. She asked for one with a postcard of the Capitol. "I had gotten it made because I work here," she says, "and I just thought it was such a cool idea."

When the gala rolled around to celebrate the $104.5 million in restorations to the Capitol, she pulled out the purse, made by Tracey Mueller, to accompany her BCBG: Max Azria dress from Saks Fifth Avenue. The personalized touch turned a few heads.

Although the store's gone, we tracked down where you can get the purses locally. They're at the Judy Newcomb Gallery/The Great Frame Up, located at 11382 Mall Drive near Chesterfield Towne Center. Various scenes, materials and embellishments are available, ranging from $35 to $75.
