In tribute of the “Xu Bing: Tobacco Project” exhibition, author Eric Burns will speak on the topic of his book, “The Smoke of the Gods: A Social History of Tobacco.” Burns has been an NBC news correspondent, host of “Fox News Watch” and a “Today Show” personality, and has been credited as one the finest writers in the history of television news. A screening of Jim Jarmusch’s 2004 film “Coffee and Cigarettes,” starring Bill Murray and Steve Buscemi, will follow the talk. It’s a dryly comic series of short vignettes with characters engaged in diverse and offbeat conversations. While smoking. The talk and film take place in the Leslie Cheek Theater at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on Friday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m. $8-$10. 340-1400.
