Hip-Hop at Tower

Not much has been heard lately from Tower Records in The Shops at Willow Lawn. But the silence is broken Jan. 28 at noon with a hip-hop showcase of Richmond's indie artists, featuring free performances by K-Dizz'e, Currency, Frannie Annie, Grown Folks, and The Generals. 673-6424.

Jerry Joseph at Fusion

The Portland singer-songwriter who heads Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons arrives at Fusion for a night of acoustic guitar and ruminations on addiction, politics and life on the road, Jan. 26 at 10 p.m. $8-$10. 249-2338.

Pearls and Brass at Legend Brewing Company

Big and fuzzy sound, wandering, bluesy guitar work, a dedication to sheer output: Pearls and Brass falls loosely into that longhaired stoner-rock category, but the players don't sit still long enough to drone. The Pennsylvania trio plays Legend to support a new album, "Indian Tower," with opener The Amoeba Men Jan. 29 at 10 p.m. $5. 232-3446.

Asleep at the Wheel at Canal Club

Western swing, with all its fiddles and bass-thumping and slick guitars, is like the Texas equivalent of bluegrass. And Austin's Wheel has been at it for 30 years, taking the fine art of big band and twanging it. The group turns the Canal Club into a dance hall Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. $17.50-$20. 643-2582.

Positive Vibe Cafe Turns One

It's been a year of jazz brunches and buffalo meatloaf, and the Stratford Hills cafe celebrates with three days of music, featuring Susan Greenbaum on Jan. 27 at 8 p.m.; The Taters, The Goodfellas and the Gary Gerloff Band Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.; and Chicago Cy manning the brunch Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. Free. 560-9622.

Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings at Alley Katz

Soul, in its classic, that-man-did-me-wrong, funky Motown goodness, is contained in the sounds of Sharon Jones and her Daptone label-mates The Dap-Kings. They're touring in support of their new album "Naturally," Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. with Richmond's own funk outfit Pennyshaker. $10. 643-2816.
