Service Workers Deserve the Title

Rather than have a list with the usual pols and rich, please honor the service workers (“Richmonder of the Year,” Letters, Dec. 16). When I think of people who have really made this past, really crappy year a little more tolerable, they are not the Ukrop's boys or Richmond's self-aggrandizing mayor, it is:

1. The men and women who make my favorite lunch at Five Guys (Willow Lawn).

2. The men who prepare the great beef barbecue at Virginia Barbecue (Lakeside).

3. The Afghanistan migrant who runs the cleaners where my shirts get done so well (Corner of Staples Mill and Glenside).

4. WRVA's Paul Bottoms delivering the news via my clock radio at 5 a.m.

5. The men at Rowlett's Bicycle shop (Broad and Staples Mill) who are always happy to help me fix my bike.

These are just some of the thousands of our fellow citizens who, by providing goods and services with grace and kindness to their customers, have made an otherwise miserable year, a bit less bitter for all of us.
