The "Nutcracker" bear costume has been boxed up in mothballs and the Richmond Ballet is running its third Studio Series show of the season, so it must be almost spring. The company has to shed those winter ounces so it'll be ready for the world premiere of a new work by San Francisco choreographer Val Caniparoli, "Violin," and "From Far Away," by Mauricio Wainrot, featuring Valerie Tellman and Phillip Skaggs, seen here. Caniparoli created this piece especially for the ballet, based on a violin solo and chamber piece by Heinrich Biber, and it reflects his more classical tastes. Argentine Wainrot's piece comes out of storage; it hasn't been performed in Richmond in a decade. This season also marks the retirement of three Richmond Ballet veterans: Pedro Szalay, Jenna McClintock and Katherine Gansman, who will most likely not be boxed up afterward. Studio 3 runs through March 26 with 6:30 p.m. performances Tuesday-Thursday, 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. shows Friday-Saturday, and 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday matinees. Tickets are $22.
