Before every other creative thought revolved around the concept of some remake, reboot or reimagining, referential inspiration was enough to develop something truly great. Such is the case with Jonathan Larson's modern stage musical, “Rent.” Taking cues from Giacomo Puccini's beloved opera “La Boheme,” this Tony Award-winning production held a mirror to a generation living with the spread of HIV and AIDS, using an impoverished New York setting and a diverse ensemble of contemporary characters. Remaining a respected piece of Broadway history and winner of a Pulitzer Prize in drama, “Rent” has its local version coming to the Firehouse Theatre on June 24 and continuing through Aug. 1. $12-$27.
