Tapestry work typically brings with it an association of some musty Middle Age castle, where interior decoration comes second to simply keeping out a seasonal draft. For Peruvian artist Maximo Laura, tapestry is incapable of such a faded, drab existence. He repurposes the craft with the kind of unexpected vibrancy, color and surrealist emotion that belies the art form’s meticulously slow construction. Previously exhibited in countries such as Brazil, China and Germany, Laura presents his woven works in “Paths to the Sun and Moon,” a new exhibition at Art Works Gallery beginning June 24, remaining on display through July 17. 291-1400.
