“Cirque Dreams: Jungle Fantasy” at the Landmark

Who'd have thought, 20 years ago, that there'd be a whole side industry for acrobats who dress up as butterflies and elephants and combine gravity-defying feats with the kind of sensuality that makes American audiences squirm in their pleated Dockers? With the advent of the various Cirques, we've seen brightly-colored, nearly naked men throw each other around, and tiny Chinese ladies stack up on top of each other like some kind of sexy Legos, all in the name of spectacle. “Cirque Dreams: Jungle Fantasy” is no exception; the show, which premiered last June on Broadway, looks like an extended love affair between ostriches and spinning cubes — surreal, in other words. It's all tropical flowers and contortionists, but the sensuality will be subtle enough that the children won't notice their fathers squirming uncomfortably next to them, thinking about that time in Brazil with the unicorn who swore it was a lady. “Cirque Dreams: Jungle Fantasy” comes to the Landmark Theater on Tuesday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $29-$49.
