More (or Less) Very Richmond

comment

You Are Very Richmond If … you missed the deadline to send in your entry (Cover Story, May 12), which would have been: You're very Richmond if you worked for Circuit City half your life, then the company went bust, and your mother says, “This never would have happened if those big banks in North Carolina hadn't bought all the Virginia banks!”

I was disappointed to see that the contest ultimately was used to fan racial flames, with the choice of the winning entry. Sorry I participated in it.

You have no idea how much I've missed “You're Very Richmond If ….” For that matter I hadn't realized how much I missed it until this issue came out. You see, I'm not from Richmond, but I am from Virginia, and what goes for one goes for the other. Although I identify myself as coming from south of Petersburg geographically, culturally I'm truly a Richmonder.

After all, the “real” Santa Clause was at Miller & Rhoads. Going back to school meant a trip to downtown to get “the” pair of shoes. The best doctors in the state are in Richmond. You mean there are other papers in Virginia besides the Times-Dispatch? Of course, Richmond is the capital (oh, you meant of the state). And my friends from Carolina might have a limited education, but they do know their three Rs — reading, 'riting and the road to Richmond.

A periodical is supposed to reflect the wants and needs of its market — not those of its staff. And Richmonders want and need “You're Very Richmond If ….” Point being: When can I send in my entries for next year?
