Miss Tess at the Camel

Listening to Miss Tess and the Bon Ton Parade, you get the immediate feeling this jazz-driven ensemble missed its intended exit along the time-line highway. Led by the modernly vintaged Tess, whose smoky, Billie Holiday croon recalls the laid-back club scene of the '30s and '40s, the Boston-based band has little trouble reminding you just how classy and cool music could be with just a bit of brushed percussion, saxophone and standup bass. Mixing in the rhythmic, folk backbone of blues, country and swing — as well as some bygone stage garb — Miss Tess blows the dust off the genre's golden-era sheen when she plays the Camel on Wednesday, May 20, starting at 5 p.m. $5. 353-4901. — Mike Hilleary
