It’s difficult to place New York singer Miss Tess’ music into a specific genre. Elements of honky-tonk, Western swing and golden-era pop are prevalent throughout her songs, which have been gaining the attention of critics for years. Miss Tess won a Boston Music Award for outstanding folk artist of the year in 2008 and landed nominations for best jazz act in 2009 and 2011. The Boston Phoenix also named the group best roots act in 2010. Paying respect to the timeless Americana sound, Miss Tess released “Sweet Talk” in October — her first studio album in three years and the debut of her newly named backing group, the Talkbacks. Miss Tess and the Talkbacks perform at Balliceaux on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 10:30 p.m. $5. balliceauxrva.com.
