Minority Businesses Should Get More Nerve

comment
Mr. Ray Boone is a very well-respected person in our community and the city of Richmond, and he deserves to be treated as such ("Ukrop's Muzzles Black Voice, Publisher Charges," Street Talk, Dec. 27). Mr. Ukrop, do the right thing and allow all citizens of Richmond to expand their knowledge of our city from different points of view. That's what democracy is all about.

But I'm sick and tired of some of the minority businesses in our city who never march for equality or speak out against injustice. Some minority businesses have nerve. You don't see them at public forums talking about public safety, unfair bus fare hikes and other important issues that affect poor citizens in our city. Where are these businesses when average unemployed citizens need them the most?

What's more interesting, you can find them when it affects their bottom line. When you allow government officials and citizens to see the hypocrisy, you will expose yourself and people will not take you seriously. And the next time you ask an applicant, "Who sent you for this position?" just remember their qualifications, not your friend.
