The duo behind MGMT didn’t seek mainstream acceptance — the mainstream came to them. The band’s 2007 debut, “Oracular Spectacular,” was a surprise international hit, selling more than a million copies worldwide. Since then, it’s been trying to find its way back to obscurity. It hasn’t worked. Like the Flaming Lips and Ween, members continued to make witty, obtuse pop and still be popular. Their new, self-titled release follows the same formula. With its breathy blend of intimacy and obscurity, they continue to make the dance floor safe to be weird again with Beatles-esque bounces. Time will tell if they can continue their high-wire mainstream juggling act, but for now, no one does it better. MGMT plays Saturday, Nov. 30, at the National with kindred spirits Kuroma. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. thenationalva.com.
