Maxwell at the Richmond Coliseum

Rising to prominence alongside fellow artists D'Angelo and Erykah Badu, Brooklyn singer and songwriter Maxwell had been enormously important in shaping the sound of '90s neosoul. With an intimate style and approach to music reminiscent of classic Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, celebrating actual romance instead of club-scene one-night stands, the contemporary R&B artist has consistently topped the charts of his genre. After nearly eight years since his last studio album, Maxwell has returned with the gospel-rooted “Blacksummers'night,” the first release of an intended trilogy set. Leading the way with the bittersweet single “Pretty Wings,” Maxwell is scheduled to perform with special guests Common and Chrisette Michelle at the Coliseum on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7:30 p.m. $21-$125.
