Matrix Mania Keeps Keanu Running

Only nine movies were running at Short Pump 14. Same for Virginia Center 20, even though the megaplex has more than double that many screens. Most of them were full of the same Neos, Wolverines and Eddie Murphys chasing babies. Showtimes for "The Matrix Reloaded" started at 10 a.m. and continued at 10:15, 10:30, 11, 12:15 p.m., 12:30, 1, and on and on ….

Secretive and very Matrixlike, an "agent" for Regal Virginia Center 20 explained that Regal Cinema employees are forbidden to talk to the media. A representative from Regal Entertainment Group was not available for comment by press time.

In one of the many convoluted scenes from "The Matrix Reloaded" — which, mind you, starts only after countless previews for films like "Bad Boys 2" and Powerade commercials — Keanu Reeves' character Neo is broadcast on thousands of screens at once, mocking his very being. If you want, you can take that as unintentional satire of the omnipotent summer-blockbuster industry. — Wayne
