School board races rarely garner the attention of statewide office seekers — especially those who happen to be former governors and prospective presidential candidates.
That hasn't stopped U.S. Senate candidate and former Gov. Mark Warner from giving a jump-start to 2nd District Richmond School Board candidate Kim Gray.

“Kim Gray has been a leader in our efforts to build partnerships between City schools and the business and non-profit communities, and we can count on her to bring an innovative approach to the School Board,” Warner says in an authorized statement sent to the candidate Oct. 22.

Gray is running against School Board Vice Chairwoman Lisa Dawson, who previously received the endorsements of City Councilman Bill Pantele and the Coalition for a Greater Richmond, which was founded by former grocery store magnate and First Market Bank Chairman Jim Ukrop.

Gray, who has also received endorsement from State Sen. Donald McEachin, D-Henrico, was an appointee of Warner's to the state's Partnership for Achieving Successful Schools initiative, a group that sought to create partnerships between schools and the business and nonprofit communities.
