Known for his platform of sex, drugs and satanism, shock rocker Marilyn Manson unquestionably was one of the most notorious and controversial entertainers of the ’90s. Because of the popularity of 1996’s “Anarchist Superstar” — and songs such as “The Dope Show” and “The Beautiful People” — Manson was celebrated by supporters as a crusader for free speech and denounced by conservative politicians, right-wing civic groups and concerned parents. Although the initial furor has died down considerably, Manson has kept the music coming with numerous successful albums. In 2012, he released “Born Villain,” his first album since leaving Interscope Records in late 2009. Marilyn Manson performs at the National on Thursday, July 11, at 8 p.m. $40-$45. thenationalva.com.
