Mamady Kouyate was a leader in the Guinean music scene during the West African nation's cultural independence movement, but after being jailed several times for speaking out against government corruption, he fled to the United States in 2004. In New York he found Guinean musicians and others willing to make more of that rambling West African dusk-time sound of kora- and balafon-inspired electric guitars. A regular fixture in the Brooklyn scene, the Mandingo Ambassadors are scheduled to close out the University of Richmond's Global Sounds Festival on Sunday, April 10. The festival begins at 11:30 a.m. and features three stages of dance and music performances. The Ambassadors play Camp Concert Hall at 3 p.m. Free. 289-8980.
