Kitsch on Parade

Hunka Junk 4 shows us the joys of kitsch.

"I like that no-theme kind of film festival," says Conflict, who has been putting together screenings since the early '90s. His newest incarnation in the Hunka Junk series features commercials for Polaroid, toys from now-defunct companies and "Poisons Around the Home," a public service announcement featuring "kids getting ready to chug down paint thinner, which is great," Conflict jokes.

Hunka Junk taps into our nostalgia for the absurd and lost, and Conflict, like an archaeologist of kitsch, finds it and puts it on display. "Hunka Junk 4" shows at Chop Suey Books on Thursday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m. Admission is free. 497-4705.

Conflict will also DJ on Richmond Independent Radio, WRIR 97.3-FM, Tuesday, Jan. 4, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Conflict's show, "I Play No English," features music from around the world, from Albanian R&B to Russian boy bands. — Brandon Reynolds
