June 1982

A college station gets a boost.

On-air since the early 1960s, the University of Richmond’s student-run radio station, WDCE-FM 90.1, boosted its wattage in 1982, sending alternative rock all over town, along with music that couldn’t be heard anywhere else on the radio dial. Through the years, some notable shows have been created by nonstudent DJs such as DJ Fontaine, whose eclectic mix has been heard for 20-plus years every Friday night from 9 to midnight. In 1989 WCVE public radio moved to 88.9, interfering with UR’s signal, but now the station streams online at www.wdce.org.
