“At Seventeen,” folk singer Janis Ian learned that success, as she sang in her 1975 hit, “was meant for beauty queens and high school girls with clear-skinned smiles.” Since then, she’s been proving all the popular kids wrong with decades of hit singles, numerous successful albums, Grammy wins and a science fiction writing career. At 15, Ian wrote her first song, the controversial hit “Society’s Child,” about an interracial relationship in the 1960s. “At Seventeen” gained her five Grammy nominations — the most any solo female artist had collected at the time. Ian’s live performances are known for being filled with such passion and energy that the audience gets carried away. Catch her greatest hits when she performs at Ashland Coffee and Tea on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 8 p.m. $27-$32.
